What is an interactive smart board?

An interactive smart board is a large touchscreen display that lets you write, draw, annotate and control software directly on the screen with your finger or a stylus. It replaces the whiteboard, the projector and the projection screen with a single device.


The same product is sold under several names. Interactive whiteboard, smart board, interactive flat panel and interactive display all describe a touch-enabled large-format screen. Historically, an interactive whiteboard meant a projector throwing an image onto a touch-sensitive surface. Almost everything sold today is a self-contained LED panel with the touch layer built in, which is brighter, sharper and far less trouble to maintain.

A touch film applied to glass supporting up to 32 simultaneous touch points with no visible frame. This suits interactive tables, counters and installations where the finish has to look designed rather than industrial. It can also make an existing glass surface touch-enabled without altering the interior design.

We design and fabricate enclosures, kiosks and interactive tables, develop the software that runs on them, and integrate object recognition where the application calls for it. Most suppliers do not offer this.

How to size an interactive smart board for your room

Size is the decision buyers get wrong most often, and it is rarely explained properly. There is an actual industry standard for it.


The simpler rule of thumb that preceded it, and which most designers still use as a sanity check, is that in meeting, teaching and presentation spaces, the farthest viewer should sit no more than six times the image height from the screen. For detailed or text-heavy content, that ratio tightens to four times the image height.


Note that this is image height, not the diagonal size everyone quotes. On a 16:9 panel the height is roughly half the diagonal, which is why screens that look large on a spec sheet often disappoint at the back of a room.


Applying those ratios gives the following maximum viewing distances:

What this means in practice. Measure from the screen to the back row, then read up the table. A standard classroom with the back row eight metres away is not properly served by a 65-inch panel, or even an 86-inch one, if students need to read text. This is worth knowing before you buy, because a great many panels sold into Malaysian classrooms are undersized against the standard, and the complaint that follows is always the same: the students at the back cannot read it.


Two practical additions. If a room has windows along one side, glare will damage legibility more than screen size will, so check the lighting before settling on a specification. And if the budget will not stretch to the size the room needs, moving the seating is cheaper than replacing the panel a year later.

Which touch technology should you choose?

If the priority is a large screen at a sensible cost in a room that sees heavy daily use, IR is usually the better answer. If the priority is how the installation looks, or several people need to interact at once on a table surface, PCAP earns its premium.

Malaysia's Ministry of Education is working towards equipping schools with smartboards by 2027 alongside a new curriculum. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek set the target at more than 10,000 schools nationwide, and Penang became the first state to reach full implementation across all 396 of its schools. The ministry is separately targeting 800 AI-Powered Classrooms by 2027.

 

For private schools, international schools, tuition centres and universities, the practical effect is competitive. Students and parents increasingly encounter this equipment as standard, and institutions that wait will look behind.

 

For a teaching room, the features that genuinely change how a lesson runs are these:

 

  • Screen size matched to the room. Covered above, and it matters more than any other specification.

  • Wireless screen sharing so a teacher can present from a laptop or tablet without cables, and students can share work to the front.

  • Annotation over anything, including PDFs, video and live web pages, with the annotated version saved for students afterwards.

  • An anti-glare surface, because Malaysian classrooms are bright and reflections make a screen unusable from the side of the room.

  • Enough touch points for two or three students to work at the board together.

  • The right mounting. Wall mounting suits a fixed classroom; a mobile floor stand suits a centre where the board moves between rooms

In a meeting room, the value is less about teaching and more about removing friction. No projector to warm up, no cable to hunt for, no missing adapter. Content reaches the screen in seconds, people annotate it together, and the marked-up version is saved and sent before anyone leaves.


For hybrid meetings, the panel becomes the room's conferencing endpoint, so remote participants see the same annotated content as the people in the room rather than a camera pointed at a whiteboard.

This is the work Southpaw is best known for. Property developers use interactive displays in sales galleries so buyers can explore developments, switch between unit layouts and view surroundings. Museums and visitor centres use them to turn static exhibits into something a visitor explores at their own pace. Retail and automotive showrooms use interactive tables for product comparison and configuration.


These installations rarely work with an off-the-shelf panel and stock software. They need content built for the space, an enclosure that suits the interior, and often object recognition so that placing a physical item on the surface triggers the relevant content. We build all three in-house.

What does an interactive smart board cost in Malaysia?

The ranges below are compiled from pricing published by Malaysian suppliers and distributors as at July 2026, and are intended for budgeting before you request quotes. Full source list is available on request.

The sticker price is not the total cost. Budget for wall mounting or a mobile stand, installation and cabling, a PC module if you need Windows alongside Android, any content or software development, staff training, and the warranty. A cheaper panel with a one-year warranty and no local support usually costs more across five years than a better-supported one.

What is the difference between an interactive whiteboard and an interactive smart board?

In current usage, there is no meaningful difference, and both describe a large touch-enabled display. Historically, an interactive whiteboard meant a projector-based system throwing an image onto a touch-sensitive surface, while today almost everything sold is a self-contained LED panel with touch built in.

What size interactive smart board do I need for a classroom?

Measure from the screen to the back row. Following the AVIXA rule of thumb of six times image height for general content, a 75-inch panel covers about 5.6 metres and an 86-inch panel about 6.4 metres. For text-heavy teaching, the ratio tightens to four times image height, which reduces those figures to roughly 3.7 and 4.3 metres. Most full-size classrooms therefore need 86 inches or larger.

How much does an interactive smart board cost in Malaysia?

Market prices run from roughly RM4,500 for a 55-inch panel to around RM17,000 for an 86-inch, with premium and custom builds above RM25,000. Budget separately for mounting, installation, any PC module, training and content.

What is the difference between infrared and capacitive touch?

Infrared detects touch using a grid of light beams across the screen surface, works with any opaque object including styluses, and is more cost-effective at large sizes. Projected capacitive detects touch through a film on the glass, supports more simultaneous touch points, and gives a frameless finish suited to tables and design-led installations.

Do interactive smart boards need a computer?

Most run Android on board and can be used without a separate computer. A Windows PC module can be added where desktop software is required, and laptops and tablets connect by cable or wireless screen sharing.

Can an interactive smart board be moved between rooms?

Yes, on a mobile floor stand with castors, which suits training and tuition centres where one panel serves several rooms. Fixed classrooms and boardrooms are usually better served by wall mounting.
